My Kathi Lacquie

Post by Tom Hull »

This is a lacquie that was missing the base and the porch and balcony. Kathleen McLaughlin had given it to me and I was lucky as this one was just like one that was illustrated on Ted's section on the lacquie's. It was a REAL treat for me to do this. I had another lacquie that had very similar dimensions to the house part so making the base was much simplified and the proportions were pretty close. I LOVE the porthole fences and this is no exception. Though making the porch roof, posts and balcony was pretty much made simple by the one on Ted's site selecting the colors were not. I chose the dark royal blue because that was the color of the porch floor but the creamy light yellow or white was my idea BUT I noticed on the side of the house a couple of areas where their was a spot or two of this color so perhaps my guess was correct after all. At any rate the colors ARE compatible and except for the blue which was used as an accent color the rest of the colors are all complements. This is typical of the Japanese as they were as a rule very accomplished in the use of color. Those who are aware of the interesting Japanese woodblock prints are likely familiar with this talent.
I got this done just in time for my birthday!

This just continues the first posting and you can see the base as well as the back. Notice the lovely texture on the roof of this house. The last picture illustrates my work table after everything was done and the other lacquie I used for the base dimensions.

Tom, that is sharp! I like how the blue picks up the blue in the printed door. I always thought the roofs on these looked like thick, soft cardboard - like an egg carton - that had been drawn through a press to indent the pattern into them. What do you think?

Primo work Tom! Such an interesting house too, I love how much it has going on, besides the balcony and porch, it looks like they were going to put a chimney on it and then put a roof on there and made it some sort of a tower. Also the tiniest bit of single face trim around the mid section. These had to be proto types for things to come.
Thanks for sharing!!

Well actually except for the frames around the windows this is pretty much typical of this house. Kathi Showed me a couple of more of these she had and the following link is to PapaTeds site and when you get there keep scrolling down till you get to a brown Yellow and Red house with Gray base and you will see another. All had these weird towers! Though not all had the window frames. TKH
