Post subject:  Spooky Haciendas + Donut Hole mark
Pete Oehman asked about Spooky or more like Halloween houses and I found a few in my collection of haciendas. Interestingly the first two are by the same maker and carry what I euphemistically call the Donut mark. It is due to the shape of the mark with a hole in the middle that I am referring to. The first one has a twiggy type tree that is only rarely seen on these houses and most usually when it is seen is on an early Hacienda. This one has a very tiny (just a bit over 1" high), green dressed woman with a hood over her head - certainly witch like in my opinion. The colors of purple and orange also lend to the atmosphere. The second house also has some unusual features with it's VERY large corrugated cardboard roof. The colors are basically a theme in blue, and orange with a light yellow wash on one wing, but not the usual fiesta colors. These two are from the Donut mark maker.

Notice the donut mark.
And here is a variation of the original spook house by a different maker and is perhaps earlier as you can see beside the ugly khaki base it has one of those raffia type fences and these likely do not date after 1934. Pretty early for a Hacienda house and I think Ted would have been surprised by it though he illustrated a church with that type of fence. It is FAR from common. Again we see the purple this time with red combo but with a more conventional tree. This house has since been restored.

This is the odd stamped mark I found on the bottom of the pre 1934 raffia fence hacienda. No other mark than the CEILING PRICE mark, Notice there is a 50 cent mark penciled in and think it may have been a flea market price or perhaps an early antique seller one as I doubt this house would have originally brought that much.
The last photo is of my great niece when she was about 5. She loved these houses and loved helping uncle Tom with them.

That top house is definitely spooky, Ive never seen the little figure "witch" look so mean...she has dark beady little eyes! :) Cool houses! Looks like you found a helper to display them too!! :)

Just an added note. The Santa and the "witch" are pottery not porcelain. These are VERY early Haciendas. All others are a bit later and the figures are porcelain.

Tom, thanks for the photos. I've never seen these before, but they are remarkable.
