Constructing your layout

What trains do you use with your putzes? Do you try to match period? Color? Scale? Any other discussions regarding trains and putzes.

Constructing your layout

Post by Robin S »

So, I am really getting the cart in front of the horse here but I have a question about building the scene for my project and train.

Can anyone point me in the direction of resources to view and learn about scene construction. Specifically building bridges. I am determined to have a version of the Glenfinnan viaduct to run the Hogwarts Express train set on when I finally purchase it.

Robin, here's a really big one I built for an outdoor railroad from insulating foam.

The principle should be the same for indoors, depending on how big you want the thing to be. :-)

Curves would be a little more difficult. You'd have to have one piece per arch, and angle the cuts on both ends of each piece, so they'd go together at an angle.

I've seen indoor railroads where they did the same sort of thing with cardboard. To keep their sanity, the arch opening is the same on both sides, but the "outside" wall is longer than the "inside" wall.

Of course the best bridge I've ever seen built for a putz village is Howard's: http://www.littleglitterhouses.com/paul ... bridge.htm

Best of luck,

Paul

I bought some insulating foam board for something else and was thinking I might be able to use it for the layout. So that's perfect! The viaduct looked great so glad to know it's possible. I dreamed of the viaduct on the curve but that might be easier said than done. Btw, the pizza cutter was ingenous!!

If "ingenous" is the opposite of "genius," you may be right. :-)

I never had seen that bridge before. It is flat out amazing which really isn't a surprise considering the maker. Lucy
