Monkey Wards Houses

If you have an unusual piece that you have questions about, this is the place to post them. Photos are VERY welcome, though it helps if you reduce them to 800 wide before you upload them. If you can't reduce them yourself, post them anyway and I'll try to reduce them when I have time.

Monkey Wards Houses

Post by paulrace »

Here's a set on eBay that seems to be in great shape. The seller claims they're in a monkey wards box, but doesn't show a label. There's also some 1960s-era junk figures and early twinkle lights in the box. No way to know if the twinkle lights are original, but there ARE 12 structures instead of the usual 8.

I found it interesting because it shows what is apparently a complete set, which might make matching up some of the onsies and twosies that show up easier. That said, I'm thinking it's pretty late.

It is late in my opinion; I would go so far as to say 1960s

i spotted a couple of interesting doors i don't think i've seen...

the acetate doors...blue with silver...red with gold...the pie shape pattern of the panes in the arch...

and...that big church pointed arch door...i know i've never seen that one before...

regarding the bag of "things"...i believe many of them are what i call "spun cotton pine cone elves"...

almost forgot to mention...are those blue tinsel trees?...another interesting touch...

my very best regards...

Maria, thanks for tracking it down. Looks like the pine-cone snowmen came with the thing? How strange.

I had to go to the link twice to see the photos. Here's the long version.

What do we call the big white building with the trapezoid footprint? A hotel? A hospital?

You are right about the cellophane arched door HOWEVER Pete Oehmen has reproduced this late door from the sixties and has it available in acetate. Glad to have it as I have a house that has three of them used as windows! And can now replace the broken ones.

I think the white "Triangle" building is city hall or perhaps a spa!? This is the fun part of this hobby. Tom
