Foil & Card 1920's Racing Automobile

I made this one a number of years ago and this one surfaced. It is made of foil covered card. It is the old fashioned Florists foil and the numbers are those foil sticker type of years ago. I made the pattern and the curve in the back of the body was induced using a heated spoon as I remember. This is a yellow card paper not chipboard similar to a file folder. The wheels have pipe cleaner tires. and the design of the radiator resembles that of an early Bugatti. This was a fun little project that I made for the tree but also had a dual use in my Christmas village. Enjoy the pictures!

Happy New Year to you as well, Tom. According to instructions in your post, I have truly enjoyed the pics! This is an incredibly cute little toy. I had forgotten about the textured foil used by florists and have never seen any (in bulk or unused) in many years of thrifting and junking and looking for art supplies. GREAT idea and GREAT execution, and thanks for sharing pics.

Tom...

the race cars are perfect...and another facet of the world of the cardboard putz...

some viewers may not fully understand the skill level it takes to turn cardboard, paper, foil and other craft items into a near scale, highly detailed car...

When I saw your post I was immediately reminded of the tin race car sets made and sold by Lionel trains many years ago...they were the original "slot cars"...oh, how I wanted a set when I was a little boy...if I can find a picture of the cars I'll post it for all to see what a feat you have accomplished...

Thanks so much Howard - your comments make my day! Actually I made these in several colors and tried to sell them but no one would give me the 5 dollars "for paper ornaments!" I kept the blue one as it most reminded me of the "Bug". Loved that famous horseshoe grill. I don't remember the Lionel Tin race car sets at all and would like to see a picture. Do you remember those British card Micro Models? I made Shakespeare's Globe Theater from one of their kits AND a 1900's Mercedes Benz Roadster racer. In that pack was also a 40's European racer with a curved rear end - though I never made that model I read how the curved rear of it was molded over a spoon which I used in this project. Tom

here's a pix of a modern reproduction set..."lionel no. 85" was the original item number i believe...the vintage ones came in several color combinations...some even had replacement white rubber tires...two figures per car, too...the "driver" and i believe the other was called the "mechanic"...

tom...the "MSRP" is around $700.00...the "discounted price" through a model train retailer could be less...even then...not in my budget...
