Vintage variation on "flatties"

What kind of figures have been used with cardboard Christmas houses and villages, where do you get appropriate figures today, how do you make, prepair, repair or otherwise maintain figures?

They aren't exactly flat but they are built up in the same way Howard has been building his figures. They have a vintage charm. I would not post a link to an ongoing auction, but this is a buy-it-now. Bow wow. Ruff ruff.
