Let’s make a “twig rail fence”…it easy…and just about free!…

Post by Howard »

I’m certain you’ve seen fences around Christmas trees and winding through villages…some are very refined and neatly painted…this particular design is more rustic…the construction couldn’t be simpler…I’ve just put this short length together to show you how it’s done…

It’s made from 11” long twigs (about 3/8” in diameter) and jumbo paper clips that hold it together…the most important detail is drilling 1/16” diameter holes through the twigs 9” apart…

You can make the twigs longer or shorter…(I think shorter is better than longer)…just adjust the distance between the holes…example…9” long--holes 7” apart…10” long--holes 8” apart…12” long--holes 10” apart…

The fence can be assembled into a complete circle or one continuous length…if you make one long length, install 2” sections of twigs at each end…these have a single 1/16” diameter hole drilled through them…the advantage of one continuous length is that it fold for compact storage…

The tools, materials and details are show below…yes…pictures are worth thousands of words…

Enjoy this project!…and post some pictures of your fence…

My very best regards…Howard

(PS…now that you’ve struggled through this very rough project outline…you can see just how much I wish I had Paul’s “magic with words” and professional writing skills)

it is such a simple project...well within the skill of just about everyone...

i'm going to be making a "final version" soon...rail lengths will be 7-inches and holes will be 5-inches apart...the shorter rails look much better...this "final version" will be left in one continuous length and not made into a loop...

my very best regards...Howard...

Great, Howard. Saw a vintage one at a flea market last month - the guy wanted like $80 for it. I like the price of yours better. :-)

just finished my third (and final) version of the fence...7-inch long sections...holes 5-inches apart...the scale of the fence is much better than the first two which had much longer fence rails...it really does fold to a compact bundle, too...

my very best regards...
