Why Do I Make it So Hard to Sign Up?

I just revisited another hobby site I started in June. I had left the autoregistration features active because I hadn't set up manual registration yet, and there were features that were supposed to keep bots out of the system.
I discovered that in the last few days alone, 15,487 fake readers managed to register, and 3437 of them posted pornography and unapproved advertising.
I had to delete, not only the fake users, but several FORUMS that were full of this stuff. Which required copying the legitimate individual posts in each forum, deleting the forum, rebuilding the forum, and reposting the topics that I wanted to save.
Fortunately, there were only a few dozen such topics so far. If the same thing happened here, it would be disastrous.
