When I started this forum, I made a bunch of snowman faces to visually show whether any activity had occurred on the forums or topics. Most of you have figured those out by now, and there was a key at the bottom of most pages in case you didn't get it right away.
But I've had to add two new snowman faces because of the way the software works - once you get more than a certain number of messages, a topic is considered "popular." So I have added a snowman with raised eyebrows and his "jaw dropping" for a "popular" topic with unread messages and one with a big goofy smile and closed eyes for a "popular" topic with no unread messages.
Either way - eyes open = unread messages, eyes closed = no unread messages.
Hope this makes sense.
