Cardboard Repair of house Using Water Putty.

Post by Tom Hull »

The first photo shows a couple of repairs to a vintage house. The dormer on the right was missing and a corner of the roof had been replaced with a piece of scrap. When I finished the repairs there was unevenness especially on the roof repair that would show. The dormer because of the unevenness of the painted coconut where it attached to the roof came in for this filling technique.
The photo shows the dry powder putty container & the little bowl where the putty was mixed with water. I applied it and smoothed it down with a toothpick and when it had set some I smoothed it with my finger. Next shows it painted and lastly with coconut.
Notice in the last photo that the little bowl has thinned down tacky glue in it and I brushed this over the blue paint as well as the white areas and the red. For the red I used a combination of two different colors of coconut which came closer to replicating the original. I used a fluffy more orangey red with a somewhat coarser brighter red and got the effect of an older coconut job. Pete's stuff is GREAT!

Tom, the Barn house looks GREAT!!! Excellent restoration once again! The vintage colors look like they are matched perfect!!

I've been using Durhams alot lately! But I think I can use this technique on a Hacienda that I started to repair that has a windmill. It had a cardboard tree that broke in half and I was able to glue it, but need to fill in the crack and repaint it.

Thanks for the tutorial!!!!

I wish now I had taken more pictures before I started on this house as it would have been much clearer what the challenges were. That was indeed the point - how to fill cracks. I have just posted the side where the repair was done after completion.
