update...9/28... started the tunnel carcass...a wooden frame lined with thin corrugated cardboard and held together with screws and glue... i'm still working on other parts of the carcass...a thin plywood base, two plateau support saddles, sub plateau, road and corrugated cardboard strips that form the sides of the hill...then it will be time for some old fashioned paper mache... howard... This castle and train tunnel is going to be so incredible. I love watching all the details coming together. Thank you for sharing these steps because they are seriously inspiring. I don't think I could replicate them, but I can learn and do a more modest project. Or I can draft my cabinet maker brother for the parts that require more expertise and tools! Lucy

Update...9/29... Finished with the 3/4" thick wood plateau and the two little saddles that help support it...it's also braced on both sides and tied into the rails at the bottom edge of the tunnel...the four little holes on top of the plateau are for the wiring to the lights... Making the thin plywood base and road are next... Will...i only have basic hand tool and the following power tools...drill, cordless screwdriver, saber saw, pad sander, jig saw and dremel tool...nothing expensive or exotic... Lucy...probably would be harder to make with cardboard...but i'll bet it could be sculpted out of sheets of foam insulation...i choose wood 'cause that's what i had available...the piece may look overbuilt...perhaps it is...but i've put too much work into it to see it crumble... Overbuilt? I don't think so. In 100 years from now someone will be posting a question on Antiques Roadshow or some such show about this piece they inherited signed "Howard '17" and they are wondering about it and what it's worth. And the answer will be "This is a highly collectible item made by an artist named Howard Lamey in 2017. It worth several thousand dollars. It is not a toy and should be stored very carefully so it will last for another 100 years." That's my opinion. Lucy

update...9/30... finished the two 1/4" thick plywood base parts...made the road support, road and small wood block braces... road support made from four thicknesses of corrugated cardboard laminated into a slab and then cut to the slope profile...it actually molded quite easily into a gentle curve that follows the road... the road is three layers of thin corrugated cardboard laminated together over the curved slope... more later... howard... update...10/2... paper mache in progress...narrow strips of corrugated cardboard, crumpled newspaper, random pieces of wrapping paper and white glue...model railroad tunnels and hills have been made with this technique for many, many years... i've ordered the LED lighting...so i can't finish the paper mache until i install the wiring... final finish will be primer, texture paint, sand and birdcage grave...perhaps colored sawdust...even pieces of dollar store floral mat...a few small bottle brush trees...no snow of course... still a long way to go... my very best regards... howard... This is quite the project Howard. I'm enjoying watching your progress on this and the detail is wonderful. I can't wait to see how you approach the stonework. Good idea to have the tunnel going straight instead of curved. Have fun.
