Classic Cottage with front porch similar to July 2006 HOM...

Here's a place to post patterns you want to share, link to patterns you find elsewhere on the internet, and request particular kinds of patterns you're looking for. I've moved a few existing messages here to get the forum started.

Classic Cottage with front porch similar to July 2006 HOM...

Post by Howard »

Greetings to all…

A while back, Steve, (PutzinVT), sent me pictures of a house from an auction site…and I knew I had to build my own little glitter house version…

If the house looks familiar, it’s because you’ll find a masterful restoration of a similar house by forum member Tom Hull…go here and scroll down to July…https://cardboardchristmas.com/papateds/Hom2006.html
(Thanks, Antoinette, for jogging my memory as to where I’d seen the house! :) )

My version will be similar to the vintage originals…not an exact copy…I’ll be posting project updates, photos and patterns for the major pieces over the next several weeks…

My very best regards…

Howard…

update...10-10-2018...

here's how the classic cottage looks with the major parts completed...the chimney and dog house are not shown...i will permanently attach the steps and posts assembly plus the dog house after everything is painted and glittered...still working on the base...and drafting the pattern sheets...

Howard,

I have a kind of dumb question. How do you make such nice cuts on the dowels or wood pieces? I've used garden shears which squashes them, a Dremel tool which doesn't do much better and a craft knife which doesn't work well either. If I go to my brother's shop I can cut them with one of his saws, but that's kind of overkill and dangerous when cutting tiny pieces.

update...10-12-2018...

greetings to all...

while i'm drawing the pattern sheets for the cottage, thought i'd share the "old school, analog way" i start the process...(apologizes the technically fluent CAD folks  )...

i start with the best front view photo i can find...then trim away the base, fence and landscape...knowing that most doors are about 1/2" wide, i use that as a starting point and guide to deciding the width of the house and other basic dimensions like walls and peak height...of course there is some guess work and adjustments to dimensions and proportions now and then...it's not a perfect system...but it works for me...

hope to post the pattern sheets on saturday...

my very best regards...

Lucy,
In addition to the saw that Howard shows, I use a small miter box that I got from Micro-Mark. It makes very nice straight and angled cuts, and help to keep your fingertips out of the project!
