Really neat and an adventure that your boys will treasure and look on fondly for years. You are more ambitious that I. We have always had the flake mica around and if I need more the vintage stuff can be found on line readily. The chunky stuff is interesting but I agree it likely should be ground up a bit more. Perhaps and electric coffee grinder would do. One of the tests I use on Original houses is touch. If it is glass glitter of any kind it will feel like sandpaper. Mica doesn't do that nor does coconut. (unless some idiot has painted the coconut.) Most of the glitter on the older houses seems to me to be various grades of the glass glitter. Even the one called "Diamond Dust" glass glitter is very tactile and identifiable. Perhaps the Japanese didn't have a good local source of mica. Enjoy the fruits of your labor.
