Post subject:  FOUND OBJECTS

See the photo below--I thought I'd share one of my favorite Christmas scenes and story behind two of the objects--I know it's off-topic of cardboard houses but...

This is one of two vintage Christmas displays in my kitchen, and special to me for a number of reasons.

You will note the photo of the three boys in uniform and the child's skates directly above. Last autumn, I found a tattered, moldy box, perhaps a hatbox, at a flea market. Inside, carefully preserved and wrapped in layers of moldy tissue paper was this photo of three boys in military uniform (the frame is not special, though rusty) and the black boys skates. It broke my heart to think that this had ended up there--when the owner had gone so entirely out of their way to keep these two objects together. I purchased them both on the spot for an obscenely cheap price--just a few dollars. The cardboard backing is marked 1929, "John and Friends".

I don't know which of the boys is "John". I only know that both the skates and the photo had to come home with me.
p.s. The Santa scene on the left is from the late 40's, made by Glo-lite and the Coca-cola house up top is from the late 70's. Other items except for the Christmas tree lot (http://www.littleglitterhouses.com) are from the 50's and 60's, made in Japan.

Actually the Santa Scene is one of my favorites. I have it as well and it is somewhat scarce - strangly. I remember it was offered in the Sears Christmas Wish Book in 1953 and I wanted one BAD. No other toy would do. I asked my dad about it and showed him the picture in the catalog and he just said. "It's a Christmas decoration! Why would you want that?" I didn't have an answer for him and guess what - it was NOT under the Christmas tree that year. It took about a month of searching on eBay till I found one several years ago. I liked it so well I tried to make one out of cardboard and crayons. It didn't work too well ! ;-) Tom Hull

Maria,
Can you tell me anything about the Santa and Mrs. Claus salt and pepper shakers? I have a pair of those also and would love to know what era they are from.
Thanks!
Jill

Made in Japan; they're called "spaghetti ware" because of the scraps used.; late 50's; early 60's

Thank you Maria. I have always been curious about their age since they came from my great-aunt. (The same one who passed along the putz houses that hung on her Christmas tree and kind of started my house habit.)
I appreciate your help!
