No houses but....

There are 3 times of year when i miss the old Woolworth's--or any five and dime store for that matter--and those are at Christmas, Valentine's Day and Easter.

These are photos of my homage to Valentine's Day at Woolworth's. Where my Christmas Homage to Woolworth's was almost entirely vintage, there is some vintage here but the effect is largely done more with illusion....

The white tin hearts are vintage candy containers, old stock, from the late 70's; the heart shaped boxes with the nostalgic old greeting card motifs are new and just a few years old--they were less than a dollar fifty each---the red ruby goblets are vintage AVON; they're filled with dollar store heart items--bubble wands--and pens. The heart shaped rings on both side of the shelf are dollar store finds as are the big red tinsel hearts. The postcard is German WWI. The hanging red glass cones are vintage Christmas ornaments from the 50's.The black and white ads are xeroxed copies off my laser printer, the Woolworth sign is a reprint, the perfume bottles are vintage, as are the boy and girl die-cuts and costume jewelry. The cake is a vintage pilllbox---the cards are mainly repros from Blumchen though there are some vintage ones here and there. The heart shaped bottle vases are from the dollar store; the cash register is vintage

You can see my recent homage to Woolworth's at Christmas and the National Christmas Center too at https://www.flickr.com/photos/22283683@ ... 4029748367

Thank you.

I've been to what passes for five and dime stores these days and...well...it's not the same....

However, I stumbled into what I thought was a simple grocery/deli a few years back and was stunned to find that it had the same sort of feel---very general store-ish, mid-sized, but with lots of the five and dime things I remembered. Great fun. Lots of old store stock, still new in boxes....Had a blast. Went in for a buttered roll and a cup of coffee---came out with lots of fun stuff.

Loving it! My local five and dime was W. T. Grant - I remember walking the aisles at Christmas time. Just like in the old song ...Take a look in the five and ten glistening once again
With candy canes and silver lanes aglow...
