Post subject:  Interesting candy box

Hi all! Has anyone seen one of these candy boxes before? I think I may have seen one online or here as part of someone's collection, but I just can't remember. I'm assuming that this candy box would have been produced at about the same time as the early coconut houses, but that's just my guess. I don't know much history about the candy boxes. Any info would be great!

I picked this one up cheaply in an antique store recently and need to replace the larger tree. I planned to use it as part of my putz display but just didn't find the right spot for it. Is it a mountain? Or a car lot? It's quite confusing!

Love the Santa, car, and sponge tree! Maybe the green blob represents a hill? Thanks for sharing.!

just when you think you've seen it all!...BAM!..."interesting"...to say the least!...are there any marks on the bottom of the box?...

i can only speculate...but i think the missing green part of the tree is like the smaller luffah tree...

That is one SWEET candy box!!! :D What is the little bush made next to car made out of?? Is it clay or bisque? Doesn't look like luffa. But man what a unique piece...I'm with Howard "BAM!" Thank you so much for sharing pics of it with us!!

Heres the link to the cardboard car :) I've seen it painted a few different ways. Like with silver out line, but this is the first black car I've seen!!

John, as Howard said, the car is cardboard. It has little cellophane backed windows and is outlined in a metallic silver paint of some sort. I also have seen the red one on some styles of houses, but cannot remember if I've seen black before. What I've seen online all begins to run together haha.

Brian, the green blob  is made of crumpled paper which has been covered in a thick plaster type substance, probably something similar to the plaster used on the houses. It is very solid and from the front does have the appearance of being cast.

The bottom is stamped made in Japan inset in an oval shape.

I just thought this was such an interesting design for a candy box. With the random assortment of putz "accessories" that accompany our houses arranged on top and sprinkled with coconut. What's interesting also is that the tall tree, if it weren't missing its luffa, would stand probably 6 to 7 inches tall. Which is likely why it was damaged, standing so tall above the rest of the piece.

Candy boxes are my particular favorite, and I love the one you're posting.

Here is another example of the what I am thinking is paper mache hill construction. The little house sits on top of it and lifts off to reveal the candy compartment. It has a bottle brush type tree and the little compo Santa that we usually see. Marked Made in Japan on the bottom. One of my favorites. Although let's face it... they're all my favorites! Barb

Leben, what a great candybox, so different from anything I've ever seen, is that pink foil around the base?

Barb, love your candybox truly a special piece, may I ask what is the base is made of? A neat tree, i bet we could shape a bottle brush tree, bleach it and then dye it. It would make a nice alternative to what I often use with my glitter houses.

Thank you both for share these wonderful treasures@

old howard agrees with all the other replies...the crumbled paper "hills" are coated with a mixture of paint and something else...like plaster...

here's a picture of a reproduction i made in 2011...i used a mixture of flat white wall paint and drywall joint compound...it really fills in the wrinkles and crumples...you could probably use plaster patching compound (spackling) in place of drywall joint compound...
