Here is a quick photo of a treasure I just acquired. It is an art deco mansion created from scratch in 1/24 scale (1/2" scale for doll house types) originally built as a backdrop for displaying and photographing 1/24 scale model cars. The car shown in front of the house is about nine inches long. The house is a duplicate of one shown on the cover of House and Garden in the 1930s. This was built by a friend in the 1980s. I was fortunate enough to get several of his unique model cars as well as the house during an estate liquidation.

And it is posted here because it is just screaming for seasonal decor like any other putz house. It has no base, so I can create landscaped pieces to represent different seasons, place them right against the house, and it will all look like it goes together. The decorated house will only be displayed during prime seasonal decor times because it takes up so much space. I have to get a plexiglass cover made for it because it would never stand up to the inquiring paws on our beloved house cats.

DCrowe...
Really, really like the house!...I hope you won’t mind if I “borrow” some of the visual details and make a house that is similar to it!...if I make one I will post a free pattern...and just like you said...it truly is the perfect background for photos of scale classic cars...
My very best regards...
Howard...
Do you have a couple of pictures that show what the sides look like?

Howard, I would be very pleased if you use some of the house styling in your models. I can't take good pics right away because it is so tightly tucked away in a closet for protection. The house was on the cover of House and Garden for April 1937 if that helps. Plans are included with the article. I don't have the magazine yet. Maybe you know of an online source for scans of vintage magazines like that. I haven't had a chance to search yet.

Thanks for your compliments. My friend, Lee Baker (the builder), would be honored for his creation to be admired.

That is incredible. How appropriate that you have the house. You are the perfect person to cherish it.

And it is also incredible that from that one photo Howard says I can tell all I need to see from the magazine. That will be fun to see what he does with this.

Thank you so much for sharing this.

greetings to all...

here's my "little glitter house version" of the 1937 magazine cover house...it measures 9" wide by 5" tall...i did have to "squeeze" and "condense" some of the details...plus decide what to leave out...

it's still in the raw cardboard state so you'll see a lot of pencil marks plus different colors and kinds of cardboard and card stock...but unifying coats of primer, paint and a light sand coating will take care of that...still have to make the fenced in patio sections that go by the two small side rooms and the base...

it will be a while before i can post the patterns for the major components...i'll do that in a separate posting under the "Putz Patterns" heading...along with some more photos...

my very best regards...

howard...

PS...that house on the 1937 magazine cover is actually an architectural model...not a photo of a real home...

Howard! You are a machine! After just a few days you have already mastered the House and Garden cover model. I am really anxious to see the miniature sized one. It will be more practical to display than mine in 1/24 scale. Great work.
