Hi all,
Lynn, I think the base is paper mache, and hollow. There is a thin piece of cardboard covering the bottom. It's light as a feather and sounds hollow when you tap it.
Howard, at one time someone in our group lent me some wonderful lakkies to copy. When I examined them closely they appeared to be coated with a plaster like substance and then painted. They had a real heft to them. I used gesso to recreate the look and feel... don't know if that could have been the original substance or not.
