Do you suppose this is an original finish? Looks like a pretzel.

never seen this coarse a finish...wonder if it could be crushed shells of some kind...wouldn't rock salt start to be effected by moisture and humidity of the years?...and not look so crisp on the edges?...interesting...
howard...

No, I realize it isn't actually rock salt, but that's what it looks like . . .

I have some candy containers that have that finish, you can find them on Ted's site. He did a HOM devoted to candy containers one month (can't remember which offhand). Michael's (craft store) has a product that Lynn introduced me to, which is a ringer for this type of finish.

Might you know the brand.
I have a Micheals in a neighboring town.
I'd check it out.

Before reaching and reading Barb's comment, the first thing that came to mind was candy containers. They have the same "rock salt" surface..crushed oyster shells.

I never actually purchased it... Lynn was kind enough to send me some in a baggie. Lynn may be able to tell you the brand...

I've seen this type of finish before and one time looked at a 'shard' close-up---you could see it was a piece of shell--a scallop shell ridging as I recall. My next door neighbor's wife, who is Japanese, has some Japanese cardboard animals, vintage from the 50's, that have this kind of finish--or at least similar.

That probably goes back to using whatever they could get free or cheap. Not my favorite finish, that's for sure.

Hi everyone, what I have is called Decorative Sand by Panacea Products. I could not find it online at Michael's, but I will stop by tomorrow and check it out. Here is a picture I found on line just like the label on my bag.
I will let you know how I make out.
