Rusted Tin Roof tutorial

Post by Lucy »

I made a halloween house with a rusted looking "tin" roof. Some people might be interested in the technique for one of their houses. Mostly I used alcohol ink because it is transparent on the foil covered tape I used for the roof.

So here goes the tutorial. I'll post in 3-4 different segments so I can post photos for the important steps.

1. Cover the cardboard with foil tape. You can get this tape easily at a hardware store or one of the home improvement stores. It is not the flexible duck tape, it is true foil-covered "duct" tape to help seal ducts. I found it in the tape section at Lowes I think.

2. Then score the taped cardboard to look like the ridges on a sheet metal roof.

Now you have the scored cardboard with the alcohol inks lined up behind them.

Drop some of the alcohol ink on the foil-covered cardboard and smear around.

Continue to smear the ink around with your finger. I used progressively darker inks as I went along. I really think 3 colors is probably sufficient - a gold, orange, and brown.

I added something called "Silver mixative" which seemed to make everything meld together nicely, but truly I don't know what it is supposed to be used for.

Smear everything together again.

Then I used some acrylic distress paint (probably any acrylic paint would do) and painted the edges darker to complete the aged look.

And that's it. It's a really easy roof to do. Much easier than cutting shingles like I did for some of my other houses.

I think this would be cool on Howard's "barn" that he's gonna build! What do you think Howard? :)

Cheers,

I love alcohol inks but they can be pricey; here's a tutorial for making your own https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZWc0L0k26oE
