Sometimes when I am thinking about building little houses, I ask myself, "What do Howard and others on the forum do in this situation?"
The cardboard that I get at work is 8.5" x 11" so almost always I make my patterns to fit this size cardboard. Do ya'll do that as a general rule? When I have one that is bigger than that, I usually make a separate back piece which has tabs on both sizes to fit in on each side with the seam facing the back. I wondered what others do with larger patterns.
I noticed that most of Howard's patterns do fit that size cardboard - certainly the recent Dolly houses do and most of the Pack O' Fun houses that I looked at. Is this a similar size to what the original Japanese makers used (if they were making a smaller house, I know it wouldn't apply to the Giant houses).

Lucy...
you're right...separate backs!...it works for me....and another right assumption...intentionally designing houses to fit 8 1/2" x 11" (or smaller) cardboard...

Re: General Little House Build Question
That is interesting. I get my cardboard from all different sources (ie. free) so it is all different sizes. It never occurred to me to design to a certain size. Of course, I also have all these little leftover pieces I then need match up for a new house build.

In a week or so there will be a new "three window dolly church project" posted on the forum that will have a separate back with tabs on each side...I didn't have one single piece that was wide enough...so a separate back was the only way...
